How to survive an EMP
We are living in an increasingly turbulent time. The world is not as it once was, and that demands that people as individuals and families, and groups commit to a more self-reliant lifestyle. That’s why thinking about all the possible scenarios that could be destructive to society and being prepared as much as possible beforehand.
What is an EMP?
EMP stands for Electromagnetic Pulse and is something similar to a radio wave but, is more substantial and can affect all technology if implemented like a weapon it could do millions and billions of dollars of damage in moments. It creates high-frequency waves that can disrupt everything from the internet to an airplane’s basic functions.
There are two possible ways an EMP could happen, the first version is the most naturally occurring, and it’s a solar flare.
Solar flares are a common occurrence on our planet, but the Earth’s electromagnetic field can block and disperse most of the radiation down to non-lethal levels when it hits the atmosphere.
But, you get what we call the aurora borealis that shows up in the Northern part of North America– most commonly in Alaska and Canada.
In historical terms, both natural and man-made forms of EMPs have been monitored and tested continuously throughout the 20th century.
On July 9th, 1962 as a part of research for missile application of an EMP the US put together a warhead by the name of Starfish Prime and launched it over Honolulu and was a successful test of High-altitude EMP detonation. It also demonstrated the engineering and less reliance on electrical infrastructure while, today, we find ourselves relying on electricity for everything.
The first-ever detonation of an EMP was in 1945, in fact, Enrico Fermi, and was able to predict how a nuclear explosion would disrupt electronic equipment.
Top 5 Ways to Survive an EMP
The many considerations that come with how an EMP can be the ultimate threat that no one sees coming.
It’s an overwhelming idea to think that the modern achievements of society but, rebuilding is possible.
The key is to prepare and have every necessity possible.
If such an event does happen it’s all about maintaining and adapting to a whole new lifestyle, or you may have already prepared. But, here is a list of working out how to get through an EMP:
1. Get Food and Supplies:
It is a good idea to have an organized way of collecting and storing food, seeds for growing, and other modern necessities for 6 months or more.
2. Have Communication alternatives:
Don’t underestimate the power of Morse code or sign language if you are so inclined to learn those ways of communication. A CB radio is a good secondary option because of its long-range.
3. Plan and make groups:
This can be a general involvement with your neighbors and community or even get a group together from church and plan. It is also to keep your family aware of the possibility of what is to come.
4. Protect your electronics:
If the progression of technology has taught us anything It’s that the more advanced it is, the more that could go wrong.
But, that isn’t always true, especially with the invention of a Faraday cage.
A Faraday cage is something that could be used for the protection of electronic devices from an EMP.
If built in the form of a cage or a box, which you can either buy or build. And it would be built with Faraday fabrics and therefore could be a lightweight material.
5. Live Off-Grid
Best case scenario–you are already living in a rural area where you can provide for yourself in a way that can’t be done in an (overpopulated) city, worst case, you are living in a city or a densely populated area where prepping is most likely the last thing on anyone’s mind.
In both cases, you can prepare. A good start for both cases is finding off-grid water sources like rainwater collection or stocking up on store-bought water and having a way to store it long term, or if in rural parts setting up a hand pump well.
Final Thoughts
Doing all these things and planning long term are probably the best directions to go in.
Even if the government is still asking for your trust, at this point they cannot be relied upon for whatever reason. And just remember it’s the most practical thing is to prepare for yourself and those whom you care about.
